Many thanks to everyone who commented, liked or sent me private feedback to my article: "Why I think reducing plastic waste is important". I am posting the document (Co-author: Tamara Müller) again here for everyone who was not able to download it from the link in the article. In summary - here the reasons why I think that considering ecological sustainability is important for MedTech start-ups:

✅ Environmental Impact: The healthcare sector contributes significantly to global emissions, with 80-90% of medtech’s greenhouse gas emissions coming from the supply chain and product life cycle. Start-ups can help reduce this impact by focusing on eco-design, waste reduction and choice of supplier.

✅ Regulatory Pressures: Big players in medtech and pharma are already subject to sustainability laws, and it’s only a matter of time before all stakeholders are impacted. Getting ahead of these requirements can give start-ups a competitive advantage.

✅Secure Future Success: Changing a marketed product (e.g. a material) is a regulatory nightmare (trust me 😉). MedTech start-ups that proactively address sustainability in product development will not only make a positive environmental impact but will also position themselves for long-term success and as future acquisition targets.

3 Immediate Steps for Start-ups

  • Map your Scope 3 emissions

  • Review packaging & suppliers

  • Add sustainability KPIs to your QMS
